Grand Seiko SBGR079 Magnetic Resistant automatic 41 mm Full Set 2016

The origin

Grand Seiko introduced of magnetic resistance watches around 2012. This line includes two mechanical versions as well as three quartz versions. Note that the magnetic resistances are expressed in Ampere meters, unlike its Swiss counterparts.

This model has the particularity of offering a resistance up to 80,000 A/m, equivalent to a thousand gauss. For this, the movement is protected in a specific cage, which explains the thickness of its case. In addition, it offers twice the resistance of its little sister powered by the 9F quartz caliber.

A very sharp design

This SBGR079 is one of the sportiest watches within the House of Grand Seiko! Its 41mm steel case is angular, sliced, with a GS-like finish. Its deep black dial is enhanced with faceted indexes, typical of the brand. A detail only available on the "Sport" collection, the indexes and hands are covered with Lumibrite, a luminescent material exclusive to the brand. Unlike its quartz counterpart, this automatic version features a date display.

His steel bracelet offers a brushed finish, reinforcing the sporty feel of this watch.

A Manufacture caliber

The caliber 9S65 is the reference automatic movement, the archetype of the 9S mechanical series. The old movement and the new one may look similar in design, but they offer profoundly different performance.

Grand Seiko didn't just redesign the materials used to make this movement. It also applied microelectromechanical system technology, which uses semiconductor manufacturing technology, to the production of the watch parts. Grand Seiko has significantly improved the basic performance of this timepiece and redesigned the way the oscillating weight winds the mainspring.

The winding system of its predecessor, the caliber 9S55, used Grand Seiko's Magic Lever mechanism. The caliber 9S65, on the other hand, uses an automatic inverter. The strengthening of the components has contributed to the improved durability of the automatism inverter, which was previously a weak point.
