The Tudor Submariner 7928 sets the aesthetic standard for professional diving watches at Tudor with the addition of crown protectors. This 1960's model has an exceptional patina!

The short story

In 1954, TUDOR embarked on a new path that would help forge its legend. Indeed, that was the year that the brand's first diver's watch, the TUDOR Oyster Prince "Submariner" reference 7922, saw the light of day, just one year after its big sister, the Rolex Submariner.

Designed from the outset to meet the criteria of durability, reliability, precision and water-resistance beyond the norm while claiming a moderate price, it quickly positioned itself as the instrument of choice for professionals. Over the next 45 years, this tool-watch was constantly evolving to meet the specific requirements of the many different types of divers who are the brand's customers. The first generation of TUDOR "Submariner" undergoes numerous iterations and through them, a notable evolution in terms of performance since the maximum functional immersion depth, initially set at 100 meters, reaches 200 meters with the introduction of the reference 7924 in 1958.

During this period, numerous experiments were conducted to determine the essential characteristics of the ideal dive watch. Each reference of the 7900 series thus possesses subtle specificities that, retained or not by the evolution of the product, participate in its legend.

But it was in 1959 with the release of the reference 7928 that the general lines and technical specificities constituting the TUDOR Submariner were established. Indeed, it was with this watch that the principle of shoulders designed to protect the crown from shocks appeared for the first time at TUDOR. With this evolution, the size of the crown used is now 6 mm. This development appealed to divers, particularly those in the French Navy, who adopted this new watch as soon as the first version appeared with its famous "square crown protectors". Several executions of the reference 7928 will follow and will also be used by its divers.

Getting to know each other

The Submariner 7928 is certainly one of the most classic Tudor Submariner watches in the range, aiming to be very similar to the Rolex Submariner 5512/5513 references. Its evolution has been permanent, just like the changes in the shoulders of its case. Indeed, the TUDOR Submariner case is looking for its ultimate line, going from a first version of square crown protections to a new more pointed one, to end on round protections.

The model we are presenting is an MK5 version. It is easily recognizable, as the watch has the latest version of rounded crown protections, while retaining the "Gilt Chapter Ring" dial that made the early versions of the 7928 so charming. In fact, the dial has acquired a nice patina over time, and the tritium/sulfite markers and hands have taken on an exceptional "pumpkin" color. Like all Tudor watches of the time, the watch has a Rolex case and crown. The bezel insert is "Long Five", matching perfectly with the rest of the watch (just note that the bead is not tritium).

Finally, this watch is powered by the automatic caliber 390, a movement designed by FEF (Fabrique d'Ebauches de Fleurier), probably produced exclusively for Tudor. Operating at 18,000 vibrations per hour, it offers around 40 hours of power reserve.
