The Sky-Dweller revolution

When it was launched in 2012, the "Sky-Dweller" was then the first entirely new watch with a new name. The last "new model" the brand had released since then was the "Yacht-Master" in 1992. It was exactly the kind of watch one doesn't usually think of when one thinks of Rolex: a complicated watch, and what's more, a watch with a highly unusual implementation of several complications. This was one of the reasons why fans of the brand didn't often talk about it. But, in typical ROLEX fashion, it's actually much more interesting than you might think, given its place in the range. Indeed, at the time of its release, the "Sky-Dweller" was only available in precious metals, and was therefore seen more as a luxury watch, when in reality it was a true "toolwatch" as Rolex knows so well.

In 2020, the brand presents one of the most eagerly awaited novelties among collectors: it presents its most complicated watch on an Oysterflex bracelet! A beautiful novelty that adds a touch of sportiness! This is the first watch in the Classique category to feature this innovative high-performance elastomer bracelet. This variation features a bright black sunray-finish dial with 18 ct yellow gold hands and hour markers. Light reflections on the lugs and case sides highlight the refined shapes of its 42mm-diameter Oyster case.

Finally, the Oysterflex bracelet features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, developed and patented by the brand. Consisting of a rack integrated under the clasp cover, this device is adjusted by a sliding link equipped with a tooth that fixes into the chosen notch. The Rolex Glidelock on an Oysterflex bracelet has six notches of around 2.5mm each; it allows the length of the bracelet to be adjusted easily and without any tools by around 15mm.

Rolex 9001 caliber

On the movement side, this "Sky-Dweller" embarks Rolex's most unique and complicated caliber to date. The dial in no way does justice to the mechanical technicality of this caliber. Everything points to the second time zone and date window, while behind it lies a SAROS annual calendar. The mechanism manages the date changes on its own, requiring correction only once a year, at the end of February. The months are displayed by notches that punctuate the rehaut with a beautiful red color.

The whole is managed by the "Ring Command", a complex mechanical module that reveals itself only to the wearer of the watch. In fact, the rotating bezel allows you to select three positions that determine what you set once the crown is pulled out. You can set the month and date, select local time and reference time, without having to place the crown in different positions or use separate pushers. A solution as comfortable as it is technically brilliant.
