A brief history

Panerai's history in the manufacture of diving watches dates back to 1936, when the Italian Navy commissioned the brand to produce watches for its frogmen. The watches had to be large, robust, and easy to read in low light conditions, particularly in the very deep waters in which they were to be used.

In 1998, inspired by its history, Panerai launched the Submersible. It was a modified Luminor that met all the criteria for a professional diving watch. Its case combined the cushion-shaped curves of the Luminor with the round bezel of “L'Egiziano,” a watch Panerai had designed for the Egyptian navy in 1956. A few years later, Panerai decided to separate the Submersible from the Luminor range and make it its own collection of genuine diving watches, almost all of which are capable of reaching depths of 300 meters.

With the PAM01068, nicknamed Blu Notte — “night blue” — Panerai introduces a steel bracelet to the Submersible range for the first time in 2021! Here's a quick overview...

The model:

With its 42 mm steel case, the Submersible Blu Notte PAM01068 stands out with more compact proportions than the usual Panerai standards, without sacrificing any of its DNA. Its unidirectional rotating bezel in blue ceramic gives it a bold character while enhancing the visual intensity of the dial. The subtly crafted blue sunray dial captures the light in a play of deep reflections, evoking the seabed.

The display is organized in an intuitive and legible manner: round applied hour markers and baton hands coated with Super-LumiNova, luminescent hands, small seconds at 9 o'clock, and date window at 3 o'clock. Every detail has been designed to ensure perfect visibility, even when completely submerged. Panerai's aesthetic signature is everywhere: visual robustness, graphic balance, and that unique feeling of an instrument built for adventure.

At the heart of the watch beats the P.900 automatic caliber, designed in-house by Panerai. This highly refined movement offers a three-day power reserve in a particularly compact format. It is housed in a case water-resistant to 300 meters, closed by a solid screw-down case back engraved with the model's specifications. This reliable and proven movement makes the PAM01068 as high-performance as it is elegant.

Finally, the integrated steel bracelet plays a central role in the identity of this model. Composed of interlocking links with a complex construction, it alternates satin finishes on the outer surfaces and polished finishes on the central links, creating a subtle and refined play of light. Visually distinctive, this design is inspired by the historic bracelet of the PAM00091, launched in 1999 and made famous on the wrist of Pierce Brosnan in the film After the Sunset. On this first version, the links combined steel and titanium to emphasize the rounded, recognizable shape inspired by Panerai's legendary crown guard.

On the PAM01068, this modernized bracelet is made entirely of steel, remaining faithful to this heritage while offering ultra-comfortable wear thanks to the thinness of the links, perfectly balanced with the robustness of the case.
