In 1985, when Japan was at the forefront of technology and the watchmaking world was exploring the limits of quartz, Citizen made a big splash by introducing the first diving watch with a built-in electronic depth gauge: the Aqualand. This revolutionary engineering feat would permanently redefine the standards for tool watches. This hybrid model, combining an analog display with a digital screen, stood out with its asymmetrical silhouette and a protrusion at 9 o'clock housing the depth sensor: a bold and highly functional design.

But it was in 1988 that the Citizen Aqualand achieved posterity. Worn by Jean Reno in Luc Besson's masterpiece The Big Blue, it became the symbol of a generation, forever linking Japanese technology and Mediterranean poetry. A cult object, an instrument watch, a cinematic relic... the Aqualand transcended its status as a watch to become a legend.

In 2025, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this legendary model, Citizen is launching a tribute edition: the JP2008-06E. Faithful to the original version, it retains its unique architecture, key functions, and professional instrument DNA, while adapting to contemporary expectations. Its matte gray finish and gold details are a nod to the past, while the BENEBiOL™ strap illustrates a modern commitment to the environment. At home on the deck of a zodiac and a cult favorite in the collective imagination, this iconic watch doesn't just measure time: it tells a story.

Design: historical fidelity and unapologetic modernity

The case of this anniversary Aqualand watch features the original proportions: 50.7 mm in diameter (including the depth) and 14.8 mm thick, with an asymmetrical design dictated by its function. The depth sensor, located at 9 o'clock, is emblematic of this counter-current aesthetic: technical, utilitarian, iconic.

Made of steel with a brushed matte gray finish, the case is enhanced with gold details on the crown, pushers, unidirectional bezel, and sensor. The black dial is topped with luminescent gold hour markers, a large orange hand, and an iconic digital display between 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. The overall look is reminiscent of the CQ and JP2000 models from the 1980s and 1990s, while asserting its own unique personality.

The watch comes with a BENEBiOL™ strap, a comfortable, moisture-resistant, eco-friendly polyurethane made from bio-based materials. A strap extension is included to adapt it to a diving suit.

At the heart of the JP2008-06E is the Citizen C520 quartz movement, renowned for its precision (±20 seconds/month) and reliability in extreme environments. The typical ana-digi display offers a central analog readout and a multifunction digital screen.
