On the other side a cross surmounts the initials of Mary, with underneath the heart of Jesus crowned with thorns and her own heart to her pierced with a sword.

For the record

The Miraculous Virgin medal was originally a symbolic object born in 1830 in Paris following the apparition of the Blessed Virgin to a novice in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity in the middle of Paris. In 1830, the Blessed Virgin appeared to a novice and asked her to strike a medal in her name. She asked her to have a medal struck in her name, and that "those who wear this medal with confidence will receive great graces". There followed many cures for people with cholera, which gave the medal its name and reputation.
