The Pitch

As part of its "Change for the Better" mission, the Oris watch brand partnered with the Carl Brashear Foundation in 2015 to help it give hope to many. Carl Brashear is one of the 20th century's most determined figures to triumph over adversity. He overcame many challenges due to his background and then his disability to become the first African-American diver in the history of the U.S. Navy and the first diver to undergo amputation. In 2021, Oris presents its third model made in partnership with the Carl Brashear Foundation, a 1960s-inspired diver made entirely of bronze!

Getting to know each other

This Sixty-Five features a bronze case (like its two older sisters) with a polished finish and a 40mm diameter. A logical choice when you know that at the time, divers were made from this same material. The latter blends perfectly with the marine blue of the dial. It is topped by a unidirectional graduated bezel in relief, also in bronze, but this time brushed. It thus comes in harmonious opposition with the sunray finish of the dial. The hour markers and hands have been coated with SuperLumiNova "Old Radium" to make it easier to read the time and dive time in the darkest of environments. A domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment completes the package, offering legibility and robustness to this elegant edition. Finally, this watch is equipped with a pleasant blue fabric strap with a very thin central band and a bronze buckle. These are actually elastic nylon straps, Marine Nationale style, made exclusively by Erika's Originals.

Finally, some additional finishing touches have been made to the case back, where the engravings of the diver's helmet and the famous quote from Carl Brashear can be found.

The Oris Calibre 401

At the heart of this Oris limited edition of 2,000 is the Oris Manufacture Caliber 401. Designed entirely in-house by Oris watchmakers, it is based on the revolutionary Calibre 400 launched in October 2020. More accurate than a chronometer (-3 to +5 seconds per day), this movement solves many of the problems of today's mechanical movements: high level of anti-magnetism, 120-hour (five-day) power reserve, and 10-year extended warranty. This Oris caliber 401 differs from the Oris caliber 400 by displaying a small second at 6 o'clock.

Such is Oris' confidence in the advanced technologies built into the Caliber 401 that the brand offers a 10-year warranty on all its watches equipped with this movement. In addition, Oris recommends a 10-year service interval for watches in the Calibre 400 series, which means that barring accidental damage or checks on the gasketś you shouldn't need to bring your Divers Cal. 401 in for service until 2032 at the earliest.
