A brief history

The SBGJ003 is one of the most important models launched by Grand Seiko in 2014. Introduced as part of the Heritage collection, it faithfully reproduces the design codes of the 1967 44GS model, considered the manifesto of the Grand Seiko style. This historic watch laid the foundations for the famous “Grand Seiko Style”: flat surfaces perfectly polished using the Zaratsu technique, sharp edges, and maximum legibility—principles that are still in use today.

But the SBGJ003 is not just a stylistic tribute. It also marks a technical milestone in the brand's history: it is one of the first Grand Seiko Hi-Beat references to feature a GMT function, thanks to the introduction of the 9S86 caliber. This movement is derived from the 9S85 caliber—launched in 2009—and retains its high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, while adding a GMT hand. Its deep black dial, with a textured pattern inspired by Mount Iwate, pays homage to the mountain visible from the Shizukuishi studio, the birthplace of Grand Seiko mechanical watches. At 12 o'clock is the double Seiko logo, and at 6 o'clock, the Grand Seiko logo, in their historic layout—a feature now highly sought after by collectors, which gives this model a distinctive “retro” charm.

The faceted hour markers, sharp dauphine hands, and red GMT hand complete the exceptionally legible design. The date window at 3 o'clock is perfectly integrated, without disrupting the balance of the dial.
