The origins

The Tank captivates as much as it fascinates. At the beginning of the 20th century, Louis Cartier himself devoted his efforts to formal research aimed at integrating the round of the dial into the line of the bracelet, refining the design until the lugs were fully incorporated into the case as a natural extension of the bracelet. Inspired by the top view of a military tank, the watch follows a clear graphic principle: the brancards represent the tracks, while the case evokes the vehicle’s body. From this formal approach emerged a new and defining concept — the case lugs seamlessly extend into the bracelet, without any visual interruption.

Developed by Cartier in 1917, the Tank was officially launched in 1919. Between November 15 and December 26 of that year, six pieces were entered into stock; by January 17 of the following year, none remained. The Tank has never gone out of style — it has become a symbol of timeless elegance, transcending eras and cultures. Over the course of its century-long history, this style icon has appeared in numerous variations: Cintrée, Chinoise, Obus, Basculante, Asymétrique, Américaine, and of course the Louis Cartier.

Following the strategy initiated with the Must de Cartier line, it retains the essential codes of the Tank Louis Cartier while adapting them to a more modern approach.

Visually, the Tank Solo is one of the closest models to the original Tank, often referred to by collectors as the “Tank Normale.” It preserves the emblematic architecture: a rectangular case structured by its brancards, a clean dial, Roman numerals, and blued hands. Its intentionally pared-back design focuses on essentials, highlighting the purity of Louis Cartier’s original vision.

It distinguishes itself through slightly revised proportions and a more contemporary construction. Historically often offered in steel or powered by quartz movements, it helped democratize access to the Tank universe, offering a more affordable alternative without compromising Cartier’s aesthetic.
