Reissuing an antique watch is quite simple. Creating a new design that is reminiscent of classic watches while being equipped with the latest in contemporary watchmaking? That's much more difficult to achieve. But Jaeger-LeCoultre has done it!

The short story

There are standard, ordinary dive watches, and then there are Jaeger-LeCoultre dive watches. In the 1960s, the Grande Maison adapted its famous Memovox alarm watch in the form of the Deep Sea Alarm, a unique diver's watch that reached an impressive depth of 200 meters. In 1968, it launched the famous Polaris, housed in a unique compressor case for improved water resistance and featuring a particularly loud alarm.

Each of these versions was quite limited, and fortunately, Jaeger-LeCoultre decided to reissue them starting in the mid-2000s: the Polaris got a new life in 2008, while the Tribute to Deep Sea was released in 2011. In 2012, the Deep Sea Chronograph made its appearance. Although it is not a tribute to a particular reference, it continues the long history of innovation in diving watches that the house of Jaeger-LeCoultre has been known for since its inception and now, more than ever, meets all the demands made by lovers of professional and elegant instruments.

What you need to know

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Chronograph model has a chronograph running indicator that helps to increase the safety of divers by allowing them to ensure at a glance that the chronograph is proceeding to measure a time interval, that it is ready to be started or that the measured time is displayed on the various counters. This specificity is inspired by a historical achievement of Jaeger-LeCoultre: the Chronoflight. This on-board chronograph was invented in 1930 to equip civilian and military aircraft. It completed the range of on-board instruments manufactured by Jaeger since the 1910s. Equipped with multiple counters and totalizers, the Chronoflight allowed in particular to totalize flight times by subtracting stopovers. Used for more than 30 years, its strength and accuracy also made it adopted by racing drivers.

This Deep Sea model is the first of its kind in the world.

This Deep Sea Chronograph model is precisely inspired by this technical device of the Chronoflight in order to make it available to divers. On the watch's dial, below the Jaeger-LeCoultre signature, a round window is devoted to the chronograph power indicator. It consists of two discs, one white and one red, which provide the required information on the status of the chronograph, without any risk of error. When the display is white, the chronograph is ready to be started in order to begin measuring a time interval. Once the chronograph is started, the indication window displays both colors, red and white, to indicate that a measurement is in progress. Finally, when the chronograph stops, the red disc appears alone in the window to indicate that the measurement taken can be consulted, before the chronograph is reset to zero. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Chronograph is an instrument designed for professionals and therefore meets all the criteria imposed on diving watches by the ISO 6425 standard. It has a unidirectional rotating bezel, is water-resistant to 100 meters, is readable in the dark and meets the requirements for magnetism and shock resistance. The power indication is represented by a small second at 6 o'clock.

.

It is powered by the Jaeger-LeCoultre 758 automatic caliber that offers a 65-hour power reserve as well as a column wheel. Its chronograph features two counters (for hours, minutes) and a center seconds. The face of the watch is characterized by the clarity of the indications delivered by luminescent hands and indexes. Two pushers located at 2 and 4 o'clock, on either side of the crown, are used to start and stop the chronograph and to reset it to zero. With a diameter of 42 mm, the stainless steel case is accompanied by a black leather strap.
