The brief

Omega presents the Speedmaster "Dark Side of the Moon" in 2013 at Baselword. This Speedmaster was a game-changer, as it was then the first time a Speed was clothed in an all-ceramic case. The Manufacture thus revolutionized its iconic model, while showcasing its blend of technical and horological prowess. Subsequently, numerous variations joined the range.

In 2018, fifty years after the Apollo 8 mission, the first satellite around the moon, OMEGA presented this new arrival within "Dark Side of the Moon". Unlike previous models, this one features a specially decorated version of one of the Moonwatch's famous movements, the 1861! A caliber that deserves to be seen!

The little story

On board some of the most thrilling missions of all time, including Apollo 8 in 1968, astronauts have always relied on Speedmasters from OMEGA, a brand with an unrivalled heritage in space exploration. For the first time in human history, the crew of the Apollo 8 mission were able to admire the far side of the Moon, an event to which the newest piece in OMEGA's Speedmaster collection pays wonderful tribute.

Presented on a perforated black leather strap revealing a yellow rubber insert, this Speedmaster offers a unique design, true to the pioneering spirit that animated the Apollo 8 mission. Crafted entirely in elegant black ceramic, the watch features a carefully skeletonized dial revealing a blackened movement. Even more impressive: the caliber's components have been laser-cut to create an ultra-realistic image of the lunar surface. Like the moon, the watch has two unique faces: on the dial side, we observe the moon's illuminated surface as seen from Earth, while on the back, we admire the dark side that only astronauts have had the privilege of contemplating.

The chronograph hands are varnished yellow, while the tachymeter scale and crown are coated in white Super-LumiNova. The "Speedmaster" and "Tachymeter" markings, meanwhile, are highlighted in yellow.

Around the transparent caseback is the inscription "WE'LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE", a reference to the promise made by Jim Lovell to the command center of the Apollo 8 mission just before the craft disappeared behind the Moon.

A reinterpreted caliber 1861

This Speedmaster "Dark Side Of The Moon" is powered by a specially blackened and decorated version of OMEGA's famous calibre 1861! It has been named calibre 1869 in homage to the first moon landing, a reference to the original Moonwatch movement and OMEGA's legendary past in the conquest of space.

This hand-wound chronograph movement offers a 48-hour power reserve.
