TAG Heuer Autavia automatic 42 mm Full Set 2020

The story

A true pillar of the brand, the Autavia was naturally destined to have its own line, joining the ranks of TAG Heuer's Carrera and Monaco collections. From 1933 to 1957, the Autavia appeared on the dashboards of racing cars and airplanes. Its name derives from the contraction of automobile and aviation. After production of the Autavia dashboard counter ceased, the name remained available, and CEO Jack Heuer decided to use it for the wrist chronograph that the Swiss watchmaker launched in 1962 and produced until 1985. Since then, the Autavia has never been made into a collection. Only a few models in re-editions or special editions were offered from time to time.

In 2019, the brand decided at the Basel Fair to offer an all-new "Autavia" collection. With design elements and features inspired by models launched more than half a century earlier, this version carved its own path with a unique identity that seduced a good number of collectors when it was first presented, thanks to a bold spirit and a little vintage touch.

This 42mm-diameter Autavia model offers a case shape close to the 1962 model with beveled lugs. Inspired by aircraft cockpits, it features a blue smoked dial, with SuperLuminova-coated inserts that make it perfectly legible in any situation. Indeed, legibility was the main feature of the "new" Autavia in 2019, with large Arabic numerals and broad hands, both coated in brilliant white SuperLuminova. These Arabic numeral hour markers are inspired by one of the so-called military Autavias, as is the shape of the seconds hand. On the dial, a date window is positioned at 6 o'clock.

The rotating bezel with a 60-minute graduated scale is bidirectional in blue ceramic and crenellated as in the 60s. The XL-sized crown is inspired by the pilot's watches and counters produced by TAG Heuer from 1933 to 1957, to facilitate handling with gloves. To complete the aviation theme, the caseback is engraved with an embracing propeller and tire, a nod to the collection's rich history. This model is presented on a dark brown leather strap. A quick-release system equipped with a push-button located under the strap makes it easy to exchange for another.

Finally, this watch is powered by an automatic movement offering 38 hours of power reserve, Calibre 5 is here modified in a COSC-certified "Chronometer" version!
