The story

Mount Hotaka gave its name to a mountain range in central Japan, where all Grand Seiko's Spring Drive creations are produced. The sun's first reflections on this awe-inspiring landscape give rise to a sublime mountainscape of boiling colors, gradually shifting from pink to orange.

This year, 2024, marks the 20th anniversary of the first Grand Seiko watch powered by Calibre 9R, which powers all Spring Drive Grand Seiko watches. To celebrate this event, the Japanese manufacture has just designed a new GMT Spring Drive chronograph inspired by this summery mountain landscape. The watch was made possible thanks to a new dial treatment technology, which expresses an all-Japanese perception of time through the passage of dawn colors in this grandiose landscape.

A new dial production technique

In summer, for just 30 minutes before and after sunrise, the ridges of the Hotaka mountain range can be admired in a very special light. This unprecedented spectacle depicted on the iridescent dial is made possible by a patented "multi-layer optical coating" process. The watch has abandoned traditional dial coloring techniques in favor of a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) process. Several layers of nanometer-thick film create an effect that changes the color of the dial depending on the viewing angle. The perfectly silent, jerk-free movement of the seconds hand adds a new dimension to the concept of the nature of time.

Symbol of the brand since the first Grand Seiko watch in 1960, the lion appears here on the dial in a delicate "lion's mane" motif as well as through the angular, powerful shape of the case. Synonymous with strength and courage, the lion symbolized the Grand Seiko team's initial objective: to design the best possible timepiece in terms of precision, legibility, durability and aesthetics. These values continue to this day. The lion's presence is visible in the angular lines of the case and the claw-like, brushed-finish lugs, which contrast with the Zaratsu polished surfaces.

Water-resistant to 20 bar, this watch is designed to offer the highest level of performance in any situation. The hour and minute hands are designed to improve legibility, already enhanced by the large hour markers for which Grand Seiko is renowned. The case and bracelet are made of High-Intensity Titanium, which is lighter than stainless steel and around 30% lighter. Also designed with comfort in mind, the H-shaped bracelet links adapt easily to all wrist sizes. The hour and minute hands and hour markers are coated with LumiBrite (a green luminescent coating), while the GMT hand and bezel numerals glow blue in the dark.
