The brief history of the Monaco

In 1969, Heuer made a lasting impression with the release of the Monaco, which became the first water-resistant square automatic chronograph! The release of the film “Le Mans” in 1971 propelled the Monaco onto the international stage thanks to Steve McQueen, who wore a Heuer Monaco in the film, providing a series of iconic images that are still a central part of TAG Heuer's marketing campaigns today.

The original version of the Heuer Monaco was available for less than 10 years, having been introduced in 1969 and the last version produced around 1978. However, TAG Heuer's reissues of the Monaco have been hugely successful, having been offered in a variety of models over the past 25 years. Indeed, the Monaco chronograph may have been ahead of its time in the 1970s, but it has established itself as a modern classic in the 21st century

Since then, the Monaco has continued to reinvent itself without ever betraying its DNA: that of motor racing, daring and avant-garde design. The Racing Blue edition, launched in 2023, continues this tradition by paying tribute to the national color of French racing teams, popularized by the Bugatti Type 35, Delage, and Talbot-Lago. It's a nod to history for purists and motor design enthusiasts.

With this limited edition Racing Blue, TAG Heuer unveils a new interpretation of the legendary Monaco, inspired by historical references and a deeply distinguished aesthetic. This exclusive version immediately stands out with its 39 mm sandblasted grade 2 titanium case, which combines lightness, robustness and matte finishes, perfectly in keeping with the automotive world from which it draws its DNA. As on the historic versions, the crown is offset to the left—a direct nod to the original Calibre 11, reinterpreted here in a contemporary version.

The sun-brushed silver dial, inspired by the dashboards of sports cars from the 1920s and 1930s, creates a subtle play of light reminiscent of the metalwork of the car body. Two opaline counters at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock display the chronograph seconds and minutes respectively, while the date is discreetly positioned at 6 o'clock. The rhodium-plated applied hour markers are combined with printed blue hour markers for effective contrast and quick reading, enhanced by the application of blue Super-LumiNova on the hour and minute hands.

The ensemble is enhanced by a lemon-green lacquered central chronograph hand, which electrifies the dial. This acid hue, repeated as an accent at 12 o'clock and on the watch's exclusive packaging, gives this Monaco a bold visual identity unique to the Maison's collector's editions.

On the back, the sapphire case back reveals the Calibre 11 automatic movement, identifiable by its inverted architecture and Dubois-Dépraz chronograph module. The “One of 1000” engraving around the edge of the case back is a reminder of the exclusive nature of this limited edition. Finally, the watch is mounted on a perforated blue calfskin strap, reminiscent of racing gloves, and secured by a titanium folding clasp engraved with the Heuer logo.
