Why resell gold?

Gold redemption, at the heart of an ecological concern

For several years now, Lepage has been committed to the ambitious goal of obtaining the RJC certification (Responsible Jewelry Council ), an organisation that certifies on a global scale a company's responsible, ethical and environmental practices throughout its materials supply chain. The result of a long journey and proof of real commitment, Lepage is proud to be the first independent multi-brand house in the world to be certified by the RJC COP 2019. In addition to the Kimberley Process [which brings together governments, civil society and industry with the aim of reducing the existence of conflict diamonds (rough diamonds used to finance wars fought by rebels to destabilise governments) throughout the world], this certification reinforces our desire to contribute to the development of an increasingly responsible jewellery industry, by helping us every day to transform our ideas into measurable and concrete actions.

Gold is one of the few natural metals that cannot be manufactured, at least not without colossal resources. However, it has the remarkable ability to be melted down and reworked ad infinitum. With this in mind, buying back gold helps to promote environmentally-friendly practices. Using gold that is already in circulation avoids depleting the planet's natural resources and raw materials, while reducing the demand for new mining operations. This approach has a number of potential environmental benefits, such as preserving natural resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and cutting pollution (traditional mining is often energy-intensive, generates greenhouse gas emissions and can release toxic substances into the environment, such as mercury and cyanide).

The gold used to make most of our jewellery comes directly from the jewellery and coins bought back from our customers, and is then recast to create new creations. If we don't buy back gold, we can't fund our gold account, so we can't ask our workshops to create jewellery !

Reselling gold to finance a new purchase

Are you planning to invest in a luxury jewel or watch? In order to increase your budget, remember to check whether you have any old gold jewellery that you could resell to us (even broken, incomplete, deformed or tarnished)! In order to remain competitive and attractive, Lepage always aims to position itself slightly above the gold price, and above all to maintain a certain stability in its buy-back prices. You will therefore benefit financially from choosing our company to entrust us with the precious coins and jewellery in your possession, and we will have the opportunity to create new jewellery thanks to your contribution. !

Donner une seconde vie à votre héritage

Over time, unworn jewellery ages, and can become brittle or no longer match the tastes of new generations. Allowing you to acquire new creations that will renew and enrich your family heritage may be an additional reason to choose to resell those family jewels that may have been sleeping in a jewellery box for (too) long...

The stages in recycling gold

Checking the quality of the gold

In order to be reused, the gold you wish to sell us must be 999 thousandths, 917 thousandths or 750 thousandths gold (formerly known as 24, 22 and 18 carat gold). These are the finest qualities of gold used to make ingots, coins and precious jewellery. If you don't know what grade of gold your jewellery is made of, or even whether it is really gold or just plated, you can try to find the hallmark that will tell you its quality: a seahorse, wolf's head or eagle's head are guarantees of 999 ‰, 917 ‰ and 750 ‰ gold (to find out more about the different types of gold, please see our blog articleIf the hallmarks are illegible, you can drop off the gold you wish to resell.) If the hallmarks are illegible, you can drop off the gold you wish to resell, and our jewellers will then carry out tests, first with a magnifying glass and then chemically (with acid or a blowtorch), to determine exactly what material they are made of.

We test the quality of your jewellery to find out what materials it is made from..

If your jewel is set with stones

Except in exceptional cases, we do not buy back stones (precious, fine or ornamental) that may adorn your jewellery. Once the good quality of the gold has been confirmed, if you accept the buy-back estimate, the gems are loosened by our master jewellers before being returned to you. They can then be re-set on a new piece of jewellery. If you wish, you can contact us directly at made-to-measure design service to discuss your project.

Establishing the contract and payment

It takes around five days to complete these operations, then a cheque is given to you directly, along with the buy-back contract, and the transaction is recorded in the policy register. This file centralises all the details of gold repurchases and is an official administrative document, which may need to be consulted by the French customs service to check that everything is in order.

Sending the gold to the foundry

Lepage buys back your gold and reuses it to make new jewellery

The gold is then sold to the refiner, who separates the metals in the alloys (because 750 thousandth gold is 75% pure gold, and 25% other noble metals such as silver, copper or palladium, for example). The pure gold (also known as "fine gold") thus obtained is then sent to the foundry, before being bought back by the workshops with which Maison Lepage works to manufacture its jewellery. In practice, therefore, it is not possible to melt down one piece of jewellery to create another directly, as the gold recycling circuit is highly regulated to prevent fraud. It is also for this reason that only part of Lepage's jewellery is made from gold purchased directly from our customers, as some of our partner workshops do not work on a contract basis, i.e. we do not supply them directly with the gold they need, they have to source it themselves.

How to sell us your gold

If you wish to have your jewellery, coins or ingots appraised for resale purposes, you can go directly to a Lepage boutique in Lille, Rouen or Le Havre. The purer the gold in the items you deposit with us, the higher the purchase price. Louis d'or (generally made of 917 ‰ or 999 ‰ gold) and ingots are bought back at a higher price by weight than 750 thousandths gold jewellery, because the quantity of fine gold they contain is higher..

Please bring the following documents with you so that we can process your request :
- - proof of identity (identity card or passport),
- - proof of address less than 3 months old (gas, telephone or electricity bill).
These precautions are designed to protect buyers and resellers from any possible fraud.

Your gold is then weighed, and we give you an estimated repurchase price based on the gold price for the price we are offering. If you accept this estimate, we check the quality of the gold, as described above, then loosen it if necessary. It is then weighed again without the stones, and an official sales contract with the final buy-back price per gram is drawn up. Payment is then made by cheque, which you can collect directly from our workshops or receive by post to the address you have given us.

Your gold then goes through the process described above of being broken, sorted and recast, to find a second life in a new creation that will delight our customers!

We would like to inform you of the existence of a flat-rate tax on precious objects of 6% of the sale price for jewellery. In addition to this flat-rate tax, there is the contribution pour le remboursement de la dette sociale (CRDS) at a rate of 0.5%. However, art. 150VJ of the General Tax Code exempts jewellery sales where the sale price or customs value does not exceed €5,000. The amount is assessed on an item-by-item basis and not per contract.
