This watch reflects an era of ambitious watchmaking. A seventies design, associated with an ambitious Hi-Beats automatic movement, this calibre was designed by Longines to rival the precision offered by quartz watches.

The little story

The Ultra-Chron was introduced in 1967 to commemorate the centenary of the Longines brand. These watches used an ambitious calibre with a frequency of 36,000 vibrations, a time when competition was fierce in the field of precision. The race to high frequency was launched, with Girard-Perregaux and its Gyromatic calibre, Seiko and its Lord Marvel, but also Zenith with the famous El Primero!

The Ultra-Chron was intended to be THE flagship product for Longines, which presented this watch as "the most precise watch in the world". It guaranteed a deviation of less than one minute per month, a feat for the time. Indeed, it was common for watches of this period to be driven by mechanisms with a frequency of 18,000 vibrations.

Unfortunately, quartz won the battle, and after 6 years of production, Longines decided to abandon its high frequency calibre. It is therefore with great pleasure that we present you this Longines with a very seventies design!

Presentation

This Longines watch probably dates from 1969. Its construction was modern for the time, with its 37 mm steel case made in 2 parts. A design close to the Monaco's case, allowing to offer a water resistance, something rare at the time for shaped watches. In this version with a blue sunray dial, we find golden indexes and hands, offering a sublime contrast. The mention "T- Swiss Made -T" informs us of the presence of tritium, which has slightly patinated with time. Its curved plexiglass does not show any trace.

The whole is in very good condition for a watch of this age. Versatile, sport-chic and unusual, it is a very seventies design piece. What is certain is that it bears witness to a glorious watchmaking past!

The package

This vintage watch is a beautiful piece for watch lovers. Its calibre alone bears witness to the great history of Longines in its quest for precision. Its steel bracelet is in good condition, and is original. However, it is a bit loose, and the end-link at 12 o'clock had to be repaired. It will be delivered to you in a review pouch. This Longines Ultra-Chron has been authenticated and "cleaned" by our watchmaker and as such benefits from the Lepage Vintage one year warranty.
