The Sky-Dweller revolution

When it was launched in 2012, the Sky-Dweller was then the first entirely new watch, with a brand new family name, that the brand had released since the Yacht-Master in 1992. It was exactly the kind of watch you don't usually think of when you think of Rolex: a complicated watch, and what's more, a watch with a very unusual implementation of several complications. This was one of the reasons why Rolex fans didn't often talk about them. But, in typical Rolex fashion, it is, in fact, much more interesting than one might think given its place in the range. Indeed, at the time of its release, the Sky-Dweller was only available in precious metals, and was therefore seen more as a luxury watch, when it was in fact a real toolwatch as Rolex knows so well how to do!

However, two years later, things were different. 2014 saw the release of the most remarkable piece....

Reference 326139

The absolute star in 2014 was ref. 326139, presented with a black satin dial on a black leather strap. With its combination of white gold and leather strap, it brought the Sky-Dweller design back to life. Caliber Rolex 9001

As for the movement, this Rolex Sky-Dweller embarks the most unique and complicated calibre of Rolex to date. The dial does not do justice to the mechanical technicality of this calibre. Everything points to the second time zone and the date window, while it hides behind a SAROS annual calendar. The mechanism manages the date passages by itself, and requires correction only once a year, at the end of February. The display of the months by notches that punctuate the flange is only noticeable at second glance.

The whole thing is managed by the Ring Command, a complex mechanical module that only reveals itself to the wearer of the watch. Indeed, the rotating bezel allows you to select three positions that determine what you set once the crown is pulled out. You can set the month and date, select the local time and the reference time, without having to place the crown in different positions or use separate pushers. A solution as comfortable as it is technically brilliant.
