The late 1980s and early 1990s marked the beginning of a new era. Collectors were looking for contemporary watches with a larger diameter. Cartier decided to transform its iconic model to convince buyers looking for a larger model to wear a Tank.

The origins

Since 1917, the Tank has attracted as much as it has fascinated. This model, imagined by Louis Cartier himself, has never gone out of fashion. It has even become a symbol of timelessness and elegance that transcends time and cultural backgrounds.
This style icon has been presented in different forms over the course of its centenary: Curved, Chinese, Obus, Tilting, Asymmetrical or even American. It is precisely this last model that we celebrate today in this Lepage 10h10 selection.

Designed in 1989 as a more masculine interpretation of the classic Tank Cintrée, it takes the elongated and curved design of the 1921 Cintrée, while adapting some of its proportions to contemporary tastes, making it thicker, wider, with a more important presence on the wrist. The watch is clearly inspired by it, with its curved case and bezel, but it also differs in several ways. One of the main differences is that the case back is flat, as opposed to the dramatic curve of the Cintrée. The result is a watch that still looks curved while being technically easier to manufacture.

The famous jeweler experimented with the design for a few years, finally settling on the configuration we find on this piece, which is arguably the most desirable incarnation of the American Tank. For the record, the Américaine was only produced in precious metals, but on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Tank model in 2017, Cartier presented the Américaine in a steel version for the first time.

A timeless model

The reference 1740 that we present to you is a Tank made in yellow gold 750 thousandths in the early 2000s. The case follows the classic lines of the original 1917 Tank, which was inspired by the Renault tanks that Louis Cartier saw at work on the Western Front. Building on the legacy of the Tank Cintrée, the design is elongated and slightly curved, reaching 45mm by 27mm. The case hugs the wrist in a way that is both extremely comfortable, yet elegant and distinctive.

The polished sides of the bezel have an arched shape, sloping downward as they reach the ends of the case. The sides of the case are brushed, creating an interesting play of textures, with the crown set with a sapphire cabochon that adds a slight touch of color. Like all gold pieces, this American Tank features a closed case back with a brushed finish.

The flinqué dial is silver, or even eggshell depending on the light reflections. The guilloche pattern features a central rose motif, which radiates out to the edge of the dial. All indications are that this central rose was inspired by vintage Cartier clocks, which often featured this distinctive decoration. The railway and Roman numerals are stamped directly onto the dial in black ink, while the blued steel hands are executed in the shape of a sword, the true DNA of Cartier watches. Of course, there is the secret signature hidden in the number VII. The dial opens at six o'clock to present a date function.

With the many iterations of the Tank Américaine over the years, the elegance of the time and date version here is a sure bet for anyone looking for a watch dressed in yellow gold from one of the greatest Houses.

This Cartier Tank Américaine "Jumbo" in yellow gold is powered by the automatic movement based on the ETA 2000, designated by Cartier as Calibre 120. This movement features 20 jewels, a 40-hour power reserve and a finely decorated finish.
