La Manufacture belge Ressence cherche constamment à offrir une vision nouvelle de la Haute Horlogerie. A vision abolishing the aesthetic and technical limits of traditional watchmaking, in order to place itself at the forefront of innovation. And it's with the Type 3, a model launched in 2013, that Benoît Mintiens and his team manage to achieve a real break with what has been known until now.
The first oil-filled mechanical watch, the Type 3 required years of research and development to achieve a true feat of Haute Horlogerie. It appeals to physics in a way that no other watch has done before. Designed with a "water drop" effect that makes its dial crystal-clear for the wearer, Type 3 both expresses watchmaking tradition through its patented ROCS - Ressence Orbital Convex System - and reinvents it through new micromechanical technologies such as magnetic transmission. This new TYPE 3 takes up the pebble-shaped 44 mm case, composed of two curved anti-reflective sapphire crystals linked by a very thin grade 5 titanium center section, to which the bracelet lugs are attached. With its curved design, the watch rests only on the middle of the wrist, ensuring unrivalled comfort when worn, especially as it weighs just 79 grams. As with all Ressence watches, the absence of a crown raises questions. To set the time or wind the watch, the caseback is used. The case is completed with a gray strap, featuring a carbon-fiber weave.

What's new? An unusual color for an unusual TYPE3. With its light hues, this eucalyptus green gives the TYPE3 an unconventional look reminiscent of lush forests and wide open spaces. In addition to its new color, the TYPE3EE also boasts new graphic details. Its hour disc has been simplified, displaying an index only every two hours, while the days of the week and oil temperature gauge have been enriched with new pastel hues. Its display is managed by an exclusive module, made up of disks and dials that gravitate continuously around one another. The result is a clearer reading of the time. The information is displayed on a single plane, rather like words written on paper, making it easier to read, as it is intuitive and 2-dimensional. Its dial is flooded in 37.5 ml of oil, making it legible from every possible angle. A magnifying glass effect creates the illusion that dial information is projected and printed onto the sapphire surface. This effect is made possible not only by the oil-containing compartment, but also by engraved graphic elements filled with high-grade Super-LumiNova®.

Finally, one last subtlety compared to the rest of the TYPE 3 range: the back of the watch has also been treated in eucalyptus green, hence the double "E" of the reference! A watch that perfectly complements the existing black and white references.

The Ressence Orbital Convex System 3 (ROCS 3)

The unique time display is only possible with the patented ROCS 3 system, which replaces hands with continuously rotating discs on a main dial that itself makes one complete revolution in 60 minutes. This module is curved to match the curvature of the sapphire crystal that covers it. This mechanism is driven by the minute axis of a customized self-winding base caliber 2824/2. It comprises 215 parts, made entirely of grade 5 titanium. The entire device displays 6 pieces of information: hours, minutes, second hand (over 360 seconds), day of the week, date and oil temperature. This module and caliber assembly, has a 36-hour running time, and features a balance with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.

To operate in this viscous universe, numerous innovations had to be introduced, such as a magnetic transmission to make the link between the caliber, present in the lower part of the watch, and the ROCS module, immersed in the oil. To cope with temperature changes in the oil, a self-compensating system with 7 bellows was implemented.

Intuitive visually and in the movement, discreet in its aesthetics, the Type 3 EE is a perfect example of what 21st-century watchmaking is all about according to Ressence. It eliminates optical complexities and superfluous elements to create a timeless object that sparks and inspires the imagination.
